The choice you make when it comes to the point of view in your story determines how much interest you shall generate in your readers. You will see the importance of this aspect when you are dealing with works of fiction. The point of view dictates the tone of the book. The reader shall get a perspective from which they shall observe as the story as it unfolds. You therefore need to know about what points of view you are at liberty to use in your story. You also need to know about shifts in these points of view.
There is the first person point of view, in which the story is told through a character’s emotions, senses and internal thoughts. There shall be the use of specific pronouns and verbs. You will notice the use of the pronoun I quite a lot. All verbs shall also be in present tense.
In the second person point of view, the pronoun, You shall be extensively used. This usually gives the readers a hard time imagining themselves on the setting, because of the distance that exists between them and the story.
There is the third person point of view, in which there is the use of the pronouns He and She. The verbs shall be in past tense. If used alone, a reader may feel detached from the flow of the story. This can be seen where you get all our information through the author’s eyes, with little coming from the character.
The third person limited point of view takes the best of the third person point of view, and some of the first person point of view. The author will therefore make use of the first person character’s five senses, emotions and internal thoughts to tell the story with their third persons vantage point. In this style, the main character’s take on the world is used to drive the author’s narration.
There is also the idea of shifting points of view, which acts as a magical perspective. It will tell you of all the emotions five senses and thoughts of those who happen to be weeing through it. This can be seen when you look at how the proceedings at a party are explained from an almost aerial point of view. There shall be the description of the different ways in which people are enjoying themselves. Then something tragic happens, where a person has a seizure and collapses. We then see the main character how happens to be a law enforcement officer step up to the scene. What happens thereafter is observes through their eyes. We get to feel what they feel about the tragedy. We hear their thoughts as they vow to find out what happened here. Works of fiction would not survive without such shifts. We get a deeper level of understanding through them.
